There are more than 40 commercial fishermen dedi

cated to catching Asian carp in western Kentucky. The long-term prospects offered by ex

cessive numbers of the species are what Berry and Irwin are relying on to ensure work until they retire.

Berry said: “We want a bigger boat. From what we see out there, we confidently think we can catch

anywhere from 13,000 to 23,000 kg a day with a purse seine type of net. The schools of fish are massive.”

Once a school is located, a skiff encircles it with a purse seine

net. The lead line is then pulled in to close the net, preventing fish from escaping.

“The way we are fishing now, we start the net off at the bow of the boa

t,” Berry said. “But we are missing fish because we are not going fast enough.”

He said he and Irwin are saving and plan to reinvest all their money o

n equipment. A bigger boat would also help. They have to del

iver two to three times a day because the one they use can only hold up to 1,360 kg of fish.

In 1908, the rail line from Shanghai reached Nanjing

The rail link between Tianjin and Nanjing’s Pukou district-the Tientsin-Pukow Railw

ay-was completed in 1912. But the two lines could not be connected because there was no bridge across the river.

According to the Academy of Sociology, which was founded by scholars from Nanjing Univers

ity, at least two structures-the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge and the Chongqing Baishatuo Yangtze

River Bridge-were built before the Nanjing structure. But neither was considered a landmark by the public.

In 1913, Zhan Tianyou, who was known as “the father of China’s railways”, traveled to Nan

jing to inspect the Yangtze riverbed to build a bridge. However, he dropped his plan because the river had an ave

rage width of 1,500 meters, was more than 70 meters at its deepest and the water flow was 3 meters per second.

Zhan reportedly stayed for a few days, left without saying a word, and then decided to inspe

ct the river in Wuhan, Hubei province, before completing the first design for the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge.

the receptor as well as the corresponding reactions happening to the downstream signaling

“It will allow scientists to screen small-molecule compounds tha

In 2012, Shan took the helm of one of the world’s prem

museums. As China’s imperial palace from 1420 to 1911, the museum welcomes millions of visit

ors each year – more than 17.5 million in 2018, among the most of any museum in the world.

Shan became director when the museum was beset by controversies, inc

luding a crowding problem, a burglary and a case of someone damaging its exhibits.

He is often credited with taking creative measures to turn things around. To control the cr

owds, he set a cap of 80,000 daily visitors, and he improved the security of the museum and its exhibits.

Shan also has been known for helping the public see more of the museum and its treasures. He ex

panded the area accessible to the public from 30 percent in 2012 to 80 percent today.

The museum is guardian of more than 1.86 million cultural relics, accord

ing to a detailed inventory finished during Shan’s tenure. That

accounts for 42 percent of country’s total number of “registered national-level precious cultural relics”.

With UK politics in disarray, there’s still a risk the country

will leave the European Union without a transitional deal to protect trade. The Ba

nk of England has said the fallout from that scenario would be worse than the 2008 financial crisis.

  The big Brexit slowdown

The United Kingdom was the fastest growing G7 economy when voters went to the polls in 2016. E

mergency action by the Bank of England helped the UK economy avoid the recession that some had

predicted would follow a vote in favor of Brexit, and unemployment remains very low.

But the country still fell toward the bottom of the G7 rank

ing. Economic growth has slumped from an annual pace of around 2% to less than 1% now.

Investment by UK companies stalled after the referendum and then plunged 3.7% in 2018. Me

anwhile, the rest of the G7 has seen business investment grow around 6% a year since the vote.

Still, compared with the developed countries, China’s car

market has good long-term potential, because vehicle penetration in the country, especially in rural areas, is low. And given that China’s aging population is ris

ing, a growing number of senior citizens could buy cars to enjoy better travel experience.

Since the age of fast and assured growth is over, those who don’t respond to market changes will

fail. And declining car sales may speed up the process of incompetent players being squeezed out of the market.

Modest increase in vehicle sales likely

Shi Jianhua, deputy secretary-general of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers

Unlike the tax cut on car purchases in the past, this year’s plan will not yield immed

iate results, as it is designed mainly to improve the overall market environment and produce long-term results.

The government introduced a preferential car purcha

se policy, which allowed smaller vehicles with 1.6-litre or less powerful engines to enjoy up to 50 per

cent tax cuts from September 2015 to 2017. The stimulus policy helped car sales grow at 7.1 percent year-on-year.
